Daniel Perrett: Helping Our Children Navigate Big Feelings
“Giving children the opportunity to identify and express their feelings is a really good thing. As a parent, it’s so easy to suppress those things in your children, and have your kids grow up with broken trust and not actually be able to identify those feelings. Building that trust by really listening is really important.”
This week we speak with a returning guest, Daniel Perrett, who has two young sons, and works as a child educator.
In this conversation, Daniel discusses his role as a teacher, and his unique perspective into the societal pressures experienced by children today, especially feelings such as stress, competition, and empathy. Daniel also speaks about bringing these lessons to his role as a father, and his focus on helping his sons understand and regulate their emotions. At the midpoint of our conversation, Daniel and I switch roles and I discuss how to implement lessons from books such as Atomic Habits, the 5 AM Club, and the Morning Habit into our daily lives. We conclude with a discussion of how our parenting philosophies are intertwined with our commitments towards our communities, and how the birth of my second daughter has reminded me of how fatherhood re-contextualizes meaning and purpose in our lives.
